IPTV not working with a VPN or abroad: the causes

Your IPTV works at home but drops or refuses to connect as soon as you turn on a VPN or travel? In most cases, the cause is the network path between your device and the service, not the subscription itself. Here is how to pin it down.
Why a VPN can block or slow down IPTV
A VPN routes your whole connection through an intermediate server. For live video, this has several effects:
- an extra detour: the stream travels further, which increases delay and can cause dropouts;
- capped speed: the VPN server shares its bandwidth among many users;
- refused connections: some services do not accept connections from addresses known to belong to VPNs;
- disrupted name resolution: some VPNs change domain name resolution (DNS), and the app can no longer find the server.
What to do
- Turn off the VPN and restart the app. If playback returns, the VPN is the cause.
- If you need to keep the VPN for other uses, check whether it offers split tunnelling: it lets you exclude the IPTV app from the VPN.
- Measure the speed on the device concerned, with and without the VPN, to compare.
Why IPTV does not work abroad
When travelling, several things change at once:
The network you use
Hotel, rental or café Wi-Fi is shared between many devices and often limited. Mobile data may also be throttled for video. This is the most common cause: measure the actual speed before concluding there is a fault (what speed for IPTV).
The service’s terms
Depending on the service, use may be intended for a given area. Before you leave, ask support whether your plan can be used from the country you are going to, rather than finding out on arrival.
Simultaneous connections
If someone at home watches with the same login details while you watch abroad, you may exceed the number of screens your plan allows. The most recent connection may then be refused.
The device’s clock
A device set to the wrong date or time zone can prevent the connection or shift the programme guide. Turn on automatic time setting.
The checks, in order
- Turn off the VPN, then restart the app.
- Check the device’s date, time and time zone.
- Measure the speed on the device, on the network you are using.
- Make sure nobody else is using your login details at the same time.
- Try another network (your phone’s hotspot, for example) to isolate the cause.
- See the troubleshooting guide.
When to contact support
If playback does not return after these checks, contact support and include:
- the country and the type of network (hotel Wi-Fi, 4G, fibre);
- the device and app you use;
- whether a VPN is on;
- the error message shown, if any.
This information quickly shows whether the problem comes from the network, the device or the account.
