Android TV and Google TV are among the easiest platforms for IPTV: there is a wide choice of players and the settings are comprehensive. The same steps apply to Android boxes that include the Google Play Store.
Before you start
- Connect the device by Ethernet if possible, or place it within range of 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Install any updates offered in Settings > System > About.
- Have your login details ready (Xtream Codes or M3U address).
Install a player from Google Play
Open Google Play on the device and search for “IPTV player”. Prefer an app that:
- supports your login format;
- offers a programme guide (EPG) and favourites;
- has been updated recently, with positive recent reviews.
Only install from Google Play: APK files downloaded from unknown websites can contain malware.
Add your subscription
When you first open it, the player offers to add a playlist or an account:
- Xtream Codes (often labelled “Xtream Codes API” or “Login”): server address, username, password.
- M3U (“Playlist URL”): the full playlist address.
Give the playlist a name, confirm, then wait until the channels and programme guide have loaded.
Recommended settings
- Video player: keep the built-in player or choose hardware decoding if offered.
- Buffer: set a medium or high value if the device is on Wi-Fi.
- Guide updates: schedule them once a day to limit loading.
- Start on boot: some players can open when the device starts, which is handy for family use.
If something goes wrong
If the app shows an authentication error, re-enter your login details and check the capital letters. If the picture freezes, measure the speed on the device and see the troubleshooting guide. Choosing between Wi-Fi and cable is explained in Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable for IPTV.
