IPTV (short for Internet Protocol Television) means television delivered over the internet rather than by satellite, aerial or cable. Programmes reach your screen through your connection, and an app installed on your device displays them.
This article explains simply how it works, what you need at home, and what makes the difference between smooth playback and playback that keeps cutting out.
Internet television in one sentence
Instead of picking up a signal with a satellite dish, your TV, box or phone requests the video stream from a server over the internet, just as it would for an online video. The difference from an ordinary video platform: IPTV organises these streams into channels, with a programme guide, like television.
How to receive TV channels over the internet
Four elements work together:
- An internet connection: fibre, ADSL or 4G/5G. This is what carries the picture.
- A device: Smart TV, Android box, Fire TV stick, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV or computer.
- A player app (an “IPTV player”), installed from the device’s official store. It provides no content of its own: it plays what the service sends it.
- A subscription, which gives you personal login details to enter in the app.
Once the login details are entered, the app downloads the channel list and the programme guide, then plays the channel you choose.
Login details: M3U or Xtream Codes
The login details you receive after ordering usually take one of these two forms:
- an M3U playlist address, a single link containing the whole list;
- a username, password and server address, in the so-called Xtream Codes format.
The second format is often more convenient, because the app also retrieves the programme guide and categories. Both are compared in detail in M3U vs Xtream Codes: what is the difference?. These login details are also commonly called an “IPTV code”: see IPTV code: definition and precautions.
Live TV, catch-up and programme guide
Depending on the service and the app, you may find:
- live TV: channels, as on television;
- the programme guide (EPG, for Electronic Program Guide): what is on now and next;
- on-demand or catch-up content, when the service offers it.
What is actually included depends on the service: always ask for the details before ordering rather than relying on an advertised channel count.
What makes playback smooth
Playback quality depends as much on your setup as on the service:
- connection stability matters as much as speed: an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi close to the router limits dropouts (Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable);
- available speed must cover the chosen quality and the number of screens used at the same time (what speed for IPTV);
- the device must be recent enough to decode the video without slowing down (choosing an IPTV box);
- the app must be up to date and suited to your device (player apps).
Advantages and limits
Advantages
- No dish to install and no decoder to rent.
- The same subscription plays on several types of device, within the plan’s terms.
- The programme guide and navigation are in a single app.
Limits
- Without a stable connection, there is no smooth playback: IPTV depends entirely on your network.
- Some player apps are paid or require activation from their publisher.
- Available content can change: a trustworthy service tells you before you order.
What about Morocco?
IPTV works with the connections commonly used in Morocco (fibre, ADSL, 4G/5G) and with the most widespread devices: Samsung and LG Smart TVs, Android boxes, Fire TV, iPhone and Android. Before choosing an offer, check three points: your device’s compatibility, your connection’s stability and how clear the provider’s terms are. Our article How to check an IPTV provider details these checks.
